At the heart of the Lady Lydia Foundation lies a passion for advocacy and female empowerment.
Founded by sisters deeply committed to social responsibility, the Foundation tackles the pressing issue of period poverty in Uganda. With an initial mission of providing pads to schoolgirls in Lyantonde, they set out to address a challenge that resonated deeply across the country.
Why Period Poverty?
What began as a local problem revealed a much larger issue affecting women rural settings across the country. The sisters believed that period poverty was a solvable problem and this determination grew as they encountered young women afflicted with issues like poor hygiene, infections, and missing school due to lack of menstrual products. Witnessing these hardships firsthand in their hometown of Lyantonde, they felt compelled to take up the mantle and make a difference.
Roots at Home
Choosing Lyantonde as the focal point was a natural decision as the sisters come from a village called Kasagama in the county. At a young age, social responsibility and the ideal of charity was instilled by their parents who dedicated themselves to community service. Through their work, they honour their mother, Lydia’s, legacy and continue to make a lasting difference through in their community.
Milestones and Memorable Moments
Starting the Lady Lydia Foundation was not without its hurdles. Manuevering red tape, a challenging political climate, and skepticism about funding sources, partnerships were formed to better navigate these obstacles. Using their own funds initially, the Foundation’s primary goal was to help young women stay in school by improving menstrual hygiene and reducing stigma.
However, the importance of involving men in the conversation was quickly identified to foster a broader community understanding. Efforts began with supplying pads to three hundred girls from six primary schools which, as an initial initiative, made the prospect of expanding to secondary schools plausible. The positive reception and healthy curiosity from the girls during outreach further reinforced their commitment to the cause.
Charting Forward
The community knows its needs best, and a grounded approach will translate into meaningful impact. Our journey, grounded in family values and a strong sense of social responsibility, reflects the impact that localized, community-driven action can have on society as a whole.
Every pad provided, every girl empowered, and every conversation started brings Uganda one step closer to a future where young women can thrive without limitations imposed by inadequate resources or outdated taboos.
